BA Lukumí Studies

4 years 128 credits Quarter system 100% Online

A comprehensive study of the Lukumí tradition as practiced in Cuba and the diaspora — ceremonies, divination, ritual preparation, and community leadership within the Cuban Òrìṣà tradition.

Program overview

The Lukumí Studies program examines the rich tradition of Òrìṣà worship as it developed in Cuba during and after the transatlantic slave trade. Students learn the unique ceremonial practices, divination systems (including Dilogún and the Table of Ifá as practiced in Lukumí houses), song traditions in Lucumí language, and the organizational structures of Lukumí religious houses (ilé). The program emphasizes both historical context and contemporary practice, preparing students to serve as knowledgeable leaders within the Lukumí community.

Career paths

Graduates are prepared for roles as Lukumí priest or priestess (Olorisha/Babalosha/Iyalosha), cultural preservationist and historian, community organizer and house leader, interfaith dialogue representative, and educator of Lukumí traditions.
